Even though summer is still a few months away, now is a good time to consider some ways to spend your summer. As a high school student or parent of a high school student, I often get asked how students should spend their summer. What are some ways students can take advantage of their summers?
Because colleges conduct a holistic review of applicants and consider many factors when evaluating applicants, it is important for students to thoughtfully consider how best to spend their summers. Summers are a great time for students to get involved in a variety of activities from participating in an academic program, working in an internship or job, getting involved in community service and so much more.
How do you choose which is best option for you? The following are some tips I share with my students and families:
1- First, so your research and look for different options – review academic programs, search for volunteer opportunities and inquire about possible internships and jobs in your area.
2- Consider your goals and interests and how you can use your summers to meet their goals and interests. Ask yourself the following questions: Do you want to spend your summer volunteering? Would you like to search for a particular internship at a company that interests you?
3- Think about the pros and cons of the activities you are considering. Depending on your options, think about the advantages and disadvantages associated with each activity. Discussing your options with a college counselor can help you determine which one most aligns with your interests and goals. Keep in mind, however, that there is no one perfect activity and oftentimes because summers are so long, students can choose more than one.
4- Once you have chosen your activity, start preparing. For instance, if you are applying for academic programs, you will need to fill out an application, request recommendations and send your official high school transcripts,
